Definition
A sporting competition combining two athletic events, most famously cross-country skiing and rifle shooting.
Etymology
From Greek 'bi-' (two) plus 'athlon' (contest). The modern biathlon was developed in Scandinavia, combining skiing with hunting or military rifle skills.
