Binocular

/bɪˈnɒkjələr/ adjective

Definition

Relating to both eyes or designed for use with both eyes simultaneously. Using or involving two eyes working together for enhanced depth perception and magnification.

Etymology

From Latin 'bini' (two each, double) and 'oculus' (eye), literally meaning 'two-eyed'. The term was first used in the 18th century to describe optical instruments, though binocular vision as a concept was understood much earlier.

Kelly Says

Binocular vision is what gives humans our excellent depth perception - our brains constantly compare the slightly different images from each eye to calculate distance. This biological process inspired the invention of binocular telescopes and microscopes, turning a natural ability into a technological advantage for seeing distant or tiny worlds.
