Biotope

/ˈbaɪoʊtoʊp/ noun

Definition

A uniform environmental area that supports a particular biological community. It represents the physical space with specific environmental conditions where organisms live and interact.

Etymology

From Greek 'bios' (life) and 'topos' (place), literally meaning 'place of life.' Coined by German biologist Ernst Haeckel in 1908 to describe the physical environment component of ecosystems.

Kelly Says

Biotopes are like nature's addresses—each one has a unique combination of climate, soil, water, and terrain that determines who can live there! A single forest might contain multiple biotopes from sunny clearings to shady creek bottoms.
