A small South African antelope with a pale coat and a white facial blaze, related to the bontebok.
From Dutch/Afrikaans blaek (pale) + bok (male antelope). The word was borrowed directly from Afrikaans when Dutch settlers named the animals they encountered in South Africa.
The bleekbok is one of the rarest antelopes in the world—in the 1800s, fewer than 50 existed. Thanks to careful conservation, numbers have recovered to around 1,000, but the species remains critically endangered and exists mainly on private game reserves.
