Definition
A small, reddish-brown African antelope with distinctive white markings on its face and a sleek body.
Etymology
From Afrikaans/Dutch bles (blaze, white mark) + bok (male antelope). This word combines two elements from South African languages to describe the antelope's characteristic white facial blaze, entering English through colonial contact with South Africa.
Kelly Says
Blesboks nearly went extinct in the 1800s—hunted to just 600 animals—but South Africa's conservation efforts saved them, and now thousands live in protected areas; their white face blaze actually makes them visible from far away in the African grasslands.
