Definition
Plural of bologna: sausages made from finely ground pork, beef, or other meats, typically sliced for sandwiches.
Etymology
From Bologna, Italy, where a famous sausage called 'mortadella' originated. English speakers adopted 'bologna' in the 19th century to refer to this type of processed meat, and 'bolognas' is simply the plural form.
Kelly Says
Bologna sausage became so iconic to American lunch culture that it became a shorthand for anything fake or inferior—which is why 'boloney' means nonsense, because people jokingly dismissed it as not 'real' meat!
