A large seabird of the skua family with dark plumage, found in northern seas and known for aggressively stealing food from other birds.
From Shetland dialect, possibly from Old Norse 'búinn' (prepared) or imitative of its call. The term became standard ornithological vocabulary in the 20th century for describing this arctic predatory seabird.
