Etymology
From Italian 'bottarga,' derived from Arabic 'battārīkhah,' meaning fish roe. The word traveled along Mediterranean trade routes and evolved into various European languages as the culinary practice spread.

Ancient Romans loved botargo so much they called it 'flos salis' (flower of salt), and it's still a prized ingredient in Mediterranean cuisine today—it's basically the fancy ancestor of what we now call fish roe.
