Cornish

/ˈkɔːrnɪʃ/ adjective

Definition

Relating to Cornwall, its people, culture, or the extinct Celtic language once spoken there.

Etymology

From Cornwall + '-ish' suffix. Cornwall derives from Old English 'Cornwealas' meaning 'foreigners living in a horn-shaped region' (corn = horn, referring to the peninsula's shape). The Celtic language Cornish died out as a community language in the 18th century but has undergone revival efforts.

Kelly Says

Cornish is one of the world's most successful language revival stories—declared extinct in 1777, it now has several hundred speakers thanks to dedicated revival efforts starting in the 20th century. Unlike most dead languages, Cornish has children learning it as a heritage language, making it 'undead' rather than truly extinct.
