Brine

/braɪn/ noun

Definition

Water with a high concentration of dissolved salts, typically much saltier than seawater. Brine occurs naturally in salt lakes, underground deposits, and areas where seawater evaporates, leaving concentrated salt solutions.

Etymology

From Old English 'bryne' meaning 'burning' or 'fire,' related to the burning sensation of very salty water. The term evolved to specifically describe highly saline water that 'burns' the mouth and throat.

Kelly Says

The Dead Sea contains brine so dense that you literally cannot sink in it – the salt concentration is nearly 10 times that of regular seawater! This extreme brine creates a unique geographic environment where only specially adapted microorganisms can survive, and the salt crystallizes into otherworldly formations along the shoreline.
