Definition
An extinct genus of large hoofed mammals from the Eocene epoch, similar to a rhinoceros but with distinctive horns.
Etymology
From Greek 'bronte' (thunder) and 'ops' (eye or face), named 'thunder-face' because of its imposing appearance. Paleontologists named it in the 19th century when discovering these impressive fossils.
Kelly Says
Brontops weighed as much as a car and had three-pronged horns—early fossil hunters probably named it 'thunder-face' just because it looked incredibly intimidating.
