Browsers

/ˈbraʊzərz/ noun

Definition

Software applications used to access and view websites on the internet. Also refers to animals that feed on leaves, shoots, and other plant materials.

Etymology

From French 'brouster' meaning 'to nibble young shoots,' related to 'brost' (young shoot). The computing sense emerged in the 1990s, metaphorically extending the idea of 'browsing' through information.

Kelly Says

The leap from cattle 'browsing' grass to humans 'browsing' the web is one of technology's most elegant metaphors - both involve casually sampling from an abundant spread of options. The first web browser was actually called WorldWideWeb, created by Tim Berners-Lee in 1990!
