Definition
A scholarship or financial aid award given to students based on need or merit.
Etymology
From Medieval Latin 'bursarius' meaning 'treasurer,' which came from 'bursa' meaning 'purse' or 'bag.' Medieval universities had a 'bursarius' who managed student funds and distributed money to poor scholars. The purse-keeper became synonymous with student financial aid itself.
Kelly Says
Every student bursary is named after the medieval university treasurer who carried a leather purse full of coins for poor students. These 'purse-keepers' were so associated with student aid that we started calling the money itself by their job title.
