Caleche

/kəˈlɛʃ/ noun

Definition

A light, two-wheeled horse-drawn carriage with a folding hood, used especially in Canada and Quebec.

Etymology

From French calèche, borrowed from German Kalesche, which came from Czech kolesa (wheels). The word traveled along trade routes from Central Europe to French Canada.

Kelly Says

Caleches became so iconic in Quebec that they're still used as tourist attractions today, especially in historic Old Quebec City—they represent a vanishing form of transportation that lasted over 300 years!
