Definition
Something thrown away or rejected as no longer useful; a person abandoned or rejected; also, the act of knitting off final stitches.
Etymology
From cast (to throw) and off (away). As a compound, it emerged in the 16th-17th century. In knitting, the term emerged when the craft became more formalized.
Kelly Says
In knitting, 'casting off' creates a finished edge so stitches don't unravel—it's the opposite of 'casting on' (starting), and these terms reveal how ancient textile crafts developed their own technical vocabulary!
