Relating to or characterized by catatonia, a psychiatric condition involving immobility, stupor, or abnormal motor behavior.
Etymology
From German 'katatonie', coined by psychiatrist Karl Kahlbaum in 1874 from Greek 'kata' (down) and 'tonos' (tension, tone). The term described the muscular rigidity and postural abnormalities observed in certain mental conditions.

Catatonia was once thought to be a form of schizophrenia, but we now know it can occur with various psychiatric and medical conditions, including severe depression. The condition can involve either complete immobility or excessive, purposeless movement, showing how the same disorder can manifest in opposite ways.
