Cecum

/ˈsiːkəm/ noun

Definition

The first part of the large intestine, a pouch-like structure where the small intestine connects to the colon, and the location where the appendix is attached.

Etymology

From Latin caecus meaning 'blind,' referring to its blind-ended pouch structure that doesn't lead anywhere - it's essentially a dead-end sac at the beginning of the large intestine.

Kelly Says

The cecum is like your colon's welcome mat - it's where trillions of beneficial bacteria set up shop to help break down fiber that your small intestine couldn't handle. In many herbivorous animals, the cecum is huge and crucial for digesting plant matter, but in humans it's relatively small since we evolved to eat more varied diets!
