Definition
A small wild plant with yellow flowers belonging to the buttercup family, known for its caustic juice that was historically used medicinally and to remove warts.
Etymology
From Greek chelidonion, from chelidon (swallow), because the plant blooms when swallows arrive in spring. The name traveled through Latin and Old French into Middle English.
Kelly Says
Celandine juice is so caustic it can burn through warts—medieval people noticed swallows arriving exactly when celandines bloomed, and decided the plant must have magical timing powers.
