Definition
A printing technique where an image is carved into a block of celluloid (a plastic material) to create prints.
Etymology
From cello- (celluloid) + cut, modeled on linocut and woodcut. Emerged in the early-to-mid 20th century as an alternative to traditional printmaking materials.
Kelly Says
Cellocut represents the moment when artists embraced plastic as a legitimate artistic medium, decades before people worried about plastic pollution—it made printing faster and cheaper, democratizing an art form that once required expensive wood.
