Cellulifugal

/ˌsɛljəˈlɪfjəɡəl/ adjective

Definition

Moving or directed away from cells; especially used in physiology to describe nerve impulses or forces moving outward from a central point.

Etymology

From celluli- (cells) + -fugal (from Latin fugere, to flee). Opposite of cellulipetal; both terms were coined in physiology to describe directional movement relative to cells.

Kelly Says

Cellulifugal is like describing traffic flowing away from the city center—nerve cells use this term for signals zooming outward, and it's the opposite direction from cellulipetal (toward), giving scientists precise language for the body's constant two-way conversations.
