A genus of parasitic algae that infects and damages leaves and branches of plants.
From Greek 'kephalē' (head) + 'euros' (broad or wide, possibly referring to spread). This genus was named for its head-like or broad growth pattern on plant surfaces.
Cephaleuros is sometimes called 'red algae disease' because it turns tree leaves rust-red and can severely damage crops—it's one of the few algae that actually attack living plants rather than living peacefully in water!
