The scientific study of thunderstorms, lightning, and thunder.
Etymology
From Greek 'keraunos' (thunderbolt) + '-ics' (study or practice of). An older scientific term for what we now typically call 'atmospheric electricity' or 'thunderstorm meteorology.'

Ceraunics was a popular subject of study in the 1700s and 1800s when Benjamin Franklin and other natural philosophers became obsessed with understanding lightning—they literally flew kites in thunderstorms to study electricity, risking their lives to satisfy their curiosity.
