Definition
A rare mineral consisting of a cerium silicate, typically occurring in yellow or brownish crystals in granite rocks.
Etymology
From 'ceria' (cerium oxide) plus the mineral suffix '-ite', which names minerals after their chemical composition or origin. Named for its cerium content discovered in the 1800s.
Kelly Says
Cererite sits in rocks alongside other rare earth elements that modern technology desperately needs—they're used in everything from your phone's magnets to wind turbine generators, which is why countries mine them as strategically as they once mined gold.
