Cestodes

/ˈsɛstəˌdoʊdz/ noun

Definition

Plural of cestode; parasitic flatworms, also called tapeworms, that live in the intestines of animals and humans.

Etymology

From Latin 'cestus' (belt or girdle) + Greek 'eidos' (form). These parasites were named for their belt-like segmented appearance when observed.

Kelly Says

Tapeworms look like long, divided ribbons running through your insides—ancient scientists called them 'cestus' (belt) and that poetic name stuck for thousands of years!
