Chai

/tʃaɪ/ noun

Definition

Spiced tea, typically made with black tea, milk, and spices like cardamom, cinnamon, and ginger.

Etymology

From Chinese 'chá' meaning tea, which traveled along trade routes to become 'chai' in Hindi and Persian. The word entered English in the 20th century, though it literally just means 'tea' in many languages.

Kelly Says

When English speakers order 'chai tea,' they're technically saying 'tea tea' - but language doesn't care about redundancy when it sounds exotic. The same thing happened with 'naan bread' (bread bread) and 'sahara desert' (desert desert).
