Definition
The capital or ornamental top part of a column or pillar in architecture; also spelled capital.
Etymology
From Old French chapiter, from Latin capitellum, the diminutive of caput meaning 'head'—architectural tops are literally 'little heads'.
Kelly Says
The word 'capital' comes from the same Latin root (caput = head), so Corinthian and Ionic capitals are literally column 'heads'—ancient builders thought of pillars as having bodies!
