Definition
A sharp double bend or a series of obstacles placed on a road to slow down traffic; also means deception or trickery.
Etymology
From French 'chicane,' possibly from Spanish 'chicana' or Dutch origins, first used in 17th-century France for a card game trick before being applied to road obstacles.
Kelly Says
Racecar drivers use chicanes to increase difficulty and danger—the same word for a 'road trick' is used because these zigzag obstacles literally trick drivers into thinking they're going faster than they are!
