Chives

/tʃaɪvz/ noun

Definition

Thin, grass-like herbs from the onion family with a mild, delicate onion flavor. Used fresh as a garnish or mixed into dishes, particularly popular in French cuisine and with eggs and potatoes.

Etymology

From Old French 'cive,' derived from Latin 'cepa' (onion). Chives have been cultivated for over 5,000 years and were one of the first herbs grown in medieval monastery gardens.

Kelly Says

Chives are the only member of the onion family native to both the Old and New Worlds, making them one of the most widely distributed herbs on Earth! Their purple flowers are also edible and have a slightly stronger onion flavor than the leaves, making them popular in upscale restaurants as both garnish and flavoring.
