Chrysocolla

/ˌkrɪsoʊˈkɑlə/ noun

Definition

A beautiful blue or blue-green mineral containing copper that is sometimes used as a gemstone or in jewelry.

Etymology

From Greek chrysos (gold) + kolla (glue). Ancient Greeks called it this because it was used to solder gold together, as the mineral melts at a lower temperature than gold.

Kelly Says

Medieval alchemists loved chrysocolla because they thought it could help them turn copper into gold—they were wrong about the alchemy, but they were right that it's made from copper, so in a way they were on the right track!
