Definition
The quality or state of being stupid, foolish, or acting like a chump; gullibility or lack of intelligence.
Etymology
From chump (slang for a foolish person, possibly from dialectal origins) with -ish (adjective suffix) and -ness (abstract noun suffix).
Kelly Says
Chump became popular American slang in the 1800s, and chumpishness is what Mark Twain and other writers used to describe character foolishness—it's less harsh than 'stupidity' but more dismissive than 'naivety.'
