Definition
The process of encoding messages in secret code, or the practice of performing arithmetic calculations.
Etymology
From 'cipher' used as a verb + '-ing' (present participle). Originally meant performing mathematical calculations before it meant encoding secrets.
Kelly Says
In old school records, 'ciphering' was a standard subject taught alongside reading and writing—it meant arithmetic—yet the term reveals a time when calculation and encoding were linguistically connected as parallel intellectual skills.
