Cire

/sɪˈreɪ/ noun

Definition

A type of smooth, glossy fabric with a wax-like finish, often used in clothing and upholstery.

Etymology

From French 'ciré,' the past participle of 'cirer' meaning 'to wax,' derived from Latin 'cera' meaning 'wax.' The fabric gets its shiny appearance from a waxing process applied to the cloth.

Kelly Says

Cire fabric was invented to mimic the look of expensive glazed surfaces without actually using wax—manufacturers figured out they could chemically treat fabric to get that same slick, water-resistant shine. It became hugely popular for raincoats and fashion in the 1980s and 90s.
