Definition
Striking palms of hands together repeatedly to show approval or keep rhythm, or the present participle of 'clap.'
Etymology
From Old English 'clappan' (to strike), possibly onomatopoetic in origin, mimicking the sound of striking. The gesture became standardized as applause in formal settings around the 1600s.
Kelly Says
Clapping is one of the few universal human gestures that means the same thing across most cultures, but interestingly, some cultures traditionally show respect through other hand gestures—proving even 'universal' behaviors are really just very widespread!
