Definition
Aware of; having knowledge or understanding of something.
Etymology
From Old French connoissant (knowing), derived from Latin cognoscere (to know). The word entered English in the 15th century and became the standard British spelling of what American English writes as 'cognizant.'
Kelly Says
You're cognisant of something when you actually know it—not just heard about it—which is why this word shows up in legal documents when someone admits they had actual knowledge of a fact!
