Definition
Relating to Colchis, an ancient kingdom on the eastern coast of the Black Sea, famous in Greek mythology as the home of the Golden Fleece.
Etymology
From Latin Colchius, derived from Greek Kolchis, the name of the ancient region in what is now Georgia. The name appears in mythology connected to Jason and the Argonauts.
Kelly Says
The Colchians were real people, but their legendary reputation for magic probably came from their advanced metallurgy and gold-working—they literally had gold! The Greeks found them so exotic and skilled that myths grew around them.
