A genus of small fungal fruiting bodies or toadstools, some species of which are edible mushrooms.
From New Latin, derived from Greek kolyba meaning 'barley' or 'grain,' possibly referring to habitat or appearance. The genus name reflects the classical naming tradition in mycology.
Many edible mushrooms belong to the colyba genus, including the Japanese enoki mushroom—yet some closely related species are poisonous. This is why mushroom foraging is dangerous: evolution didn't care about making poisonous and edible mushrooms look different. It just made them pretty.
