Definition
Safe and able to be eaten; not poisonous or harmful if consumed.
Etymology
From Latin 'edibilis,' combining 'edere' (to eat) and the suffix '-ibilis' (able to be). The Latin root 'edere' is the same root that gives us 'comestible' and relates to eating.
Kelly Says
The word 'edible' reminds us that most things we touch aren't meant to be eaten—we had to invent a special word just to mark which things are safe! Babies put everything in their mouths, so this distinction became super important to our ancestors.
