Commonsensical

/ˌkɒmənˈsɛnsɪkəl/ adjective

Definition

Showing or characterized by common sense; practical, reasonable, and based on practical experience rather than theory or ideology.

Etymology

From 'common sense' + -ical (adjectival suffix, as in 'typical' or 'logical'). This more elaborate formation became standard in the 18th-19th centuries as a philosophical term.

Kelly Says

Philosophers use 'commonsensical' as a test: if something makes no commonsensical sense (like quantum mechanics at first blush), it might be true anyway, which is why 'common sense' paradoxically isn't enough for understanding reality.
