Communists

/ˈkɒmjʊnɪsts/ noun

Definition

People who support or practice communism, a political system where property and resources are collectively owned. Members of communist political parties or movements.

Etymology

From French communiste, derived from Latin communis (common, shared). The modern political meaning emerged in the 1840s with Marx and Engels, building on earlier communal living experiments and socialist theories.

Kelly Says

The word communist was initially used by opponents to mock early socialists, but Marx and Engels embraced it proudly in their 1848 Manifesto. The term's journey from insult to rallying cry to Cold War epithet shows how political language evolves with history.
