Conacre

/ˈkɔnəkər/ noun

Definition

In Ireland, the letting of land for one or two crops on a yearly tenancy, or the rent paid for such temporary use of land.

Etymology

From Irish coinn-acra, literally 'tacked land,' where coinn means 'fixed' or 'attached' and acra means 'fields.' This uniquely Irish land tenure system preserves medieval agricultural language.

Kelly Says

Conacre represented an affordable way for poor Irish farmers to survive on rented land for just a season—but it also made them incredibly vulnerable to eviction, making it central to Irish rural poverty and emigration.
