Definition
Becoming pregnant with a child, or forming an idea or plan in your mind.
Etymology
From Latin 'concipere' (con- 'together' + capere 'to take'), literally 'to take together.' The word extended from the biological act to mental processes, both described as 'taking in' or 'forming' something new.
Kelly Says
The word 'conceive' works for both getting pregnant and getting an idea because both involve something new forming inside you—the Romans saw the connection 2,000 years ago!

Ethical Language Guidance
Gender History
Reproduction language often centers male achievement (e.g., 'fathering ideas') while 'conceiving' is rarely applied to intellectual work by men. Gendered metaphor reinforces women's association with biological reproduction vs. creative autonomy.
Inclusive Usage
Use 'conceiving' for ideas across genders; pair with 'developing' or 'originating' to emphasize intellectual work equally for all.
Inclusive Alternatives
["originating","developing","initiating"]
Empowerment Note
Women philosophers, scientists, and artists have 'conceived' groundbreaking work; language should normalize this term for intellectual creativity across all genders.
