Definition
Large corporations made up of many different companies, or the act of gathering things together into a mass.
Etymology
From Latin conglomerare (to roll together), combining con- (together) and glomerare (to wind into a ball). The business meaning developed in the 1960s when companies began buying many unrelated businesses.
Kelly Says
Conglomerates became a massive trend in the 1960s-70s when CEOs realized they could buy hundreds of different companies and manage them from one office—it was called the 'Go-Go Years,' and some of these mega-corporations still exist today like Berkshire Hathaway.
