Congo

/ˈkɑŋɡoʊ/ noun

Definition

A region and river in Central Africa, also referring to two countries: Republic of the Congo and Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Etymology

From the Kingdom of Kongo, whose name derives from 'KiKongo' meaning 'mountains.' Portuguese explorers adopted the name for the river and region in the 15th century.

Kelly Says

The Congo River is the world's deepest river, reaching depths over 750 feet - so deep that it has its own unique ecosystem in its lower reaches, including blind fish adapted to eternal darkness. The river was called 'Zaire' during colonial times, but reverted to Congo after independence.
