Congressive

/kəŋˈɡresɪv/ adjective

Definition

Relating to or characteristic of a congress; tending to gather or assemble together.

Etymology

From congress + -ive (adjective suffix meaning 'tending to'). This rare adjective never became standard, overshadowed by 'congressional' which formed earlier.

Kelly Says

'Congressive' had a fighting chance against 'congressional,' but the latter won partly because '-ional' is more productive in English for forming governmental adjectives.
