Definition
Relating to or characterized by a musical or artistic consort; concerning a group performing together.
Etymology
From 'consort' (a musical ensemble or companion, from Latin 'consors' meaning 'sharing the same lot') plus the adjective suffix '-al.' The musical meaning developed in the Renaissance when chamber music groups called 'consorts' became popular.
Kelly Says
A 'consort' of viols was a group of Renaissance musicians playing together—'consertal' music is that specific kind of ensemble sound that influenced how chamber music developed.
