Consideration

/kənˌsɪd.əˈreɪ.ʃən/ noun

Definition

Careful thought about something, or kind attention to other people’s feelings and needs.

Etymology

From Latin *consideratio*, from *considerare* "to look at closely, reflect on." It originally meant serious, attentive thought.

Kelly Says

To give something consideration is to mentally zoom in and really look. The same word covers thinking hard about ideas and being gentle with people—both are forms of paying close attention.

Ethical Language Guidance

Gender History

Women have often been expected to show ‘consideration’ for others’ needs, especially in domestic and care roles, while their own needs received less consideration in law, workplace policy, and public life. Appeals to consideration have sometimes been used to discourage women from asserting their rights.

Inclusive Usage

Use ‘consideration’ symmetrically for all genders, and be cautious about invoking it only to police the behavior of those with less power.

Inclusive Alternatives

["attention","regard","thoughtfulness"]

Empowerment Note

Women’s advocacy has pushed institutions to give serious consideration to issues like harassment, caregiving, and pay equity that were previously minimized.
