Definition
Cosine is a trigonometric function that relates the length of the adjacent side of a right triangle to the length of the hypotenuse.
Etymology
It comes from New Latin “cosinus,” short for “complementi sinus,” meaning “sine of the complement.” Mathematicians named it because the cosine of an angle equals the sine of the angle’s complement (90° minus the angle).
Kelly Says
Cosine secretly measures ‘how horizontal’ a direction is. At 0°, cosine is 1 (fully horizontal); at 90°, it’s 0 (no horizontal at all). That’s why it shows up in physics whenever you’re splitting a force or motion into x- and y-components.
