Definition
living or kept in a cote, which is a shelter or coop for birds like doves or pigeons.
Etymology
From 'cote' (Old English cote, a shelter for animals) plus the past participle suffix '-ed'. The word originally referred to any small shelter but became most associated with dove cotes.
Kelly Says
Dove cotes were status symbols in medieval times—only wealthy people could afford to keep pigeons for food and sport, so having 'coted' birds was a sign of nobility and wealth.
