Countertouch

/ˈkaʊntərtʌtʃ/ noun

Definition

A touch or hit in response to an opponent's touch, particularly in fencing where both fencers score points in a rapid exchange.

Etymology

From counter- + touch. Touch developed from Old French touchier. In fencing, a touch means hitting the opponent with the blade—countertouch describes a reciprocal hit.

Kelly Says

Modern fencing rules had to account for countertouch—when two fencers hit each other simultaneously, determining who touched first required watching slow-motion replays long before sports invented instant replay.
