Cubes

/kjubs/ noun

Definition

Three-dimensional geometric shapes with six equal square faces, twelve equal edges, and eight vertices. Plural of cube.

Etymology

From Latin 'cubus,' borrowed from Greek 'kybos,' originally meaning 'die' (as in dice). The mathematical meaning developed from the cubic shape of dice, extending to any six-sided regular solid and then to the mathematical concept of raising numbers to the third power.

Kelly Says

Cubes are fundamental to human spatial reasoning and appear across cultures in games, architecture, and art - from ancient dice to modern Rubik's cubes. The mathematical concept of 'cubing' a number (raising it to the third power) comes directly from calculating the volume of a cube, making this one of the most intuitive connections between geometry and algebra.
